GIHSN in Science Uncertain effects of the pandemic on respiratory viruses
SARS-CoV-2 and the associated non-pharmaceutical interventions severely disrupted the circulation of respiratory viruses. It could mean a future shift in the epidemiology of respiratory diseases, the potential for new epidemic threats, or larger outbreaks than previously observed. It is also unknown how long it will take for seasonal circulation patterns to return to pre-pandemic levels.
This uncertainty in the future epidemic outlook reinforces the need for a global surveillance network for respiratory viruses, bringing together key players (multilateral and bilateral organizations, local governments, foundations, civil society, academia, and industry).
More than ever the GIHSN is welcoming new partners and synergies with other networks so that we can tackle these challenges.
